Meet the CTown Coaches

WHO WE ARE

Our trainers are also the best in the area. We are strength and conditioning pros, not part-time trainers who are doing this as a side gig. This means we're 100% committed to CTOWN and to you. Being the best damn coaches we can be is our passion! We hold ourselves to a higher standard and see our members' success as our own success.
  • R.E. Lewis

    Co-Owner, Head Coach

R.E. Lewis is a coach here at CTOWN CrossFit and specializes in making people generally more awesome. He believes that fitness is much more than hitting aesthetic goals or new PRs. It’s about enjoying the journey along the way. “This is my life, this is my passion, this is all I know; I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Coach R.E.’s fascination with the human body first took shape at the age of 17, learning anatomy to become a more proficient human weapon. At 21, he became the youngest instructor of Marcial Tirada System of Kali. By 22, he was teaching martial arts on a regular basis, honing his skills as a coach and mentor, and learning more by teaching than he could have imagined. Early 2010, his world shifted as he was introduced to the CrossFit methodology.

“I went from sharpening my elbows and knees to strengthening my quads and triceps, I wanted to challenge my body in ways that I never had before. I found myself devoting more of my time to getting better at the all the aspects of CrossFit. The human body is amazing and it loves to move and be challenged. In trending fashion, I seem to find myself teaching that which I become most passionate about. I am unable to watch small things keep people from their potential without helping, I was given this body to help others excel. My life’s purpose as a coach is to help exploit people’s human potential, keep them safe, and have fun all at the same time.”

    Co-Owner, Coach

Larry Crooks is the Co-Founder, Business Manager and Coach here at CrossFit CTOWN. He specializes in creating a community that inspires others to make a positive change in their lives. “My goal as a coach and the Business Manager is to provide you with a fun, safe, effective, and supportive environment for you to pursue and conquer your fitness goals.”

Coach Larry’s start in the CrossFit world came by way of a shoulder surgery back in 2010. “My intentions were to incorporate 3 weekly workouts into my routine and do “cardio” 2-3 days a week. I acknowledge I was a fitness idiot before I found CrossFit. The moment I suffered through my first WOD, I knew this was the right path to fitness, health, and wellness. I quickly became a 6 day a week CrossFitter and decided to get my Level 1 Certification. Needless to say, I am now 100% addicted to CrossFit and the results I derive from it and I am passionate about sharing my experience to help others.”

Coach Larry jokes that transitioning from chubby kid to competitive athlete only took him 40 years to figure out, but that he’s living proof that consistent participation in CrossFit combined with a healthy diet can positively impact the mind, body and spirit. “Fundamentally, I believe that fate puts certain opportunities in front of us, but that it is up to us to take some action or initiative to realize those opportunities.”

When Coach Larry isn’t in the box, you can find him at the end of a dog leash or two, behind the lens of a camera hoping to capture some cute dogs or inspirational athletes, or boarding a flight to his next adventure.

Coach Renee’s start in the CrossFit world actually came via Groupon deal. “In college, I began long distance running and completed 6 half marathons and 1 full marathon. I was looking for a more challenging workout outside of running when I came across a deal for CrossFit. It turned out to be the best money I’ve ever spent. CTOWN has an amazing coaching staff with their attention to detail and breadth of knowledge, the feeling of community in the gym, and the unique and challenging programming that has kept me on my toes and helped me to grow over the past several years. After a few years of being a member, I knew I wanted to be a bigger part of the CTOWN community and that’s when I began my journey towards a coaching role.”

Coach Renee loves seeing the lightbulb moment for her athletes, where the pieces of the puzzle come together after weeks or months of training. She is passionate about making CTOWN members feel more comfortable and proficient with a particular movement. She also loves helping her athletes understand how important exercise and physical activity are in creating an overall healthy lifestyle. “Those moments can lead to unlocking a person’s true potential.”

She jokes that her start in CrossFit was far from graceful, her background in high school gymnastics and track and field provided her with a solid base to build upon.

Within a single year of doing her first WOD, Coach Julie qualified for the 2010 CrossFit Games, and finished in 5th. Year after year, she progressed placing higher and higher. In 2013, she took off of competition to focus on medical school. The following year, Coach Julie returned to CrossFit Games taking 3rd place. Today, she has now returned her focus to medical training and helping CTOWN athletes live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

“I believe it is my mission to use the talents I’ve been given to inspire and empower others to live healthier, more fulfilling lives. After coaching and programming with the Bomani Strength Program (a Steve’s Club Affiliate), I found my real talents and passions for helping people see athletic progress and making them laugh. After graduation I moved to Cleveland, Ohio to start medical school at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Coach Tyler has always had an affinity for endurance sports. In high school, he was a varsity soccer player and swimmer and in 2014, he completed his first half marathon in under 2 hours.

“I absolutely love the sport of CrossFit and teaching others about this methodology. I coached at CrossFit Independence for about a year prior to coaching at CTOWN.  I bought a home in 2014 in North Olmsted and switching to a closer gym made sense.  I’ve known about CTOWN and got a good recommendation.  I started as a member first before coaching and immediately knew these was the place for me.”

“I feel strongly about achieving balanced health through mind, body and spirit. To work harmoniously, you need to feed these the appropriate nourishment – your mind needs meditation and positivity, your body needs quality rest and food, and your spirit needs a strong faith in God.”

Coach Stefanie grew up as an athlete and dabbled in everything from dance to karate. She was a varsity letter winner in volleyball and lacrosse and is now a huge Michigan Wolverines fan (her alma mater). She is one of our “home grown” athletes whose potential, aptitude and respect for the sport set her apart as a candidate for the coaching staff.

“I would rather help others work on form, strength and skill than work on my own any day! I love teaching one new thing per class. Seeing that “ah-ha” moment in someone’s eyes makes this job worthwhile. Our members value the connection as much as they value the workout.”
